Materials Needed
- Rotary cutter: Ensures clean, straight cuts without fraying the sewing label edges.
- Ruler: acrylic quilting ruler or metal quilting ruler (I used a Cricut 18" Blue Cutting Ruler in the images)
- Regular tape (like Scotch tape): To secure the sewing label sheet to the cutting surface.
- Cutting mat: Choose a small one (around 12"x18") for easier rotation.
Step-by-Step Guide to Cutting Sewing Labels
Step 1: Taping the Sewing Label Sheet Down
Start by laying your sewing label sheet flat on the cutting mat. Tape the short edges down to prevent any movement. This will help keep everything secure as you cut.
Make sure the tape stays outside of the cutting marks so there is no tape on your Sewing labels; you want the tape to be only on the excess fabric around your labels, not on the labels themselves.

Use a small self-healing mat that you can easily turn. This makes the cutting process smoother and helps in managing space. We use a 12" x 18" mat in the studio to cut all our labels.
Step 2: Making the First Set of Cuts
Align your ruler along the horizontal cut marks indicated on your uncut sewing label sheet. Using the rotary cutter, follow the ruler to slice through the cutting guides printed on the sewing label sheet. Be sure to cut through the taped edges first; this keeps the strips perfectly in place while cutting the horizontal strips and later when cutting the vertical strips.

Step 3: Make the Second Cuts
After cutting all the horizontal strips from the sewing label sheet, turn the mat 90 degrees to start cutting the vertical lines.
The tape will hold the already cut strips in place, allowing you to cut the remaining sides without shifting. Cut through the label sheet's vertical lines using the printed guidelines.
- Accuracy Tip: If you find it hard to keep the strips from moving around, you can tape all four sides of the uncut sewing label sheet! This way you will have no shifting and can confidently cut out your sewing labels!
Step 4: Finishing Up & Extra Tips
Once all cuts are made, remove the outer edges of extra fabric and excess tape from your cutting mat. What you’re left with are your individual custom sewing labels, neatly cut and ready to be sewn or ironed into your projects.
- Blade Care: Keep your rotary cutter blade sharp. A dull blade can snag the fabric or cause uneven cuts.
- Taping: Taping around the entire perimeter of the sewing label sheet can help when first cutting out your labels. This will prevent any shifting when cutting or turning the label sheet.
